Ten unusual excuses for not completing a Self Assessment on time

Each year HMRC receives some unusual excuses from Self Assessment customers who didn’t complete their tax return on time - The excused listed here given as appeals against HMRC penalties for late returns, and all were unsuccessful.

It's a serious matter if you missing the Self Assessment deadline on 31 January is  - and you'll end up paying a greater price the later you file your tax return.

If you have a valid reason, that is 'something unexpected or outside your control that stopped you meeting a tax obligation,' you may be able to submit an appeal to HMRC and they may be lenient. There are no hard and fast rules in this situation, and each appeal is treated as a unique case.
