Ten (sur)real excuses for missing the Self Assessment deadline

Missing the Self Assessment deadline on 31 January is no laughing matter - and the more you delay, the more you have to pay. If you can a valid reason, that is 'something unexpected or outside your control that stopped you meeting a tax obligation,' you may be able to submit an appeal to HMRC and they may be lenient. There are no hard and fast rules in this situation, and each appeal is treated as a unique case.
