Around three and a half million UK taxpayers claim a tax refund every year. HMRC says at least one in every seven tax assessments was incorrect for the Tax Year 2012/13. Most tax refunds are for between £350 and £500.
You’re able to claim a tax refund if you’re paying too much tax on your current employment. You’ll receive your refund from HMRC within a few weeks through your weekly or monthly pay slip.
You can claim a tax rebate up to four years past. If you’re owed a refund from a previous year or employment, you’ll receive a P800 tax form in the post from July 1 onwards, followed by a ‘payable order’ cheque from HMRC around two weeks later.
Verified Identities are the best way to beat fraudsters and scammers. HMRC never send notifications of tax rebates by email or text message. If you’ve received such a message, you should report it immediately so HMRC can investigate.
